Trump’s Legal Strategy to Fight Impeachment Is ‘Reckless Public Banter’

The Trump administration has no legal strategy to fight impeachment, according to a legal scholar who spoke to Politico on Thursday. President Donald Trump is trying to treat impeachment as a purely political battle and may be undermining his own defense.

“There is no discernible legal strategy coming out of the White House,” George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley said.

“Many of the latest positions laid out in the letter undermine the White House’s best legal arguments,” he said.

The White House issued a letter to Congress saying it would not co-operate with impeachment and calling the whole thing illegitimate. As many, many legal experts have pointed out, the letter was amateurish and did nothing to help the President.

“The lawyers are dealing with a client who wants to see this type of aggressive and, frankly, reckless public banter,” Turley said.

“There has never been any evidence of the legal team being the driving force behind the White House’s public statement or strategy. At some point, they will have to mount a legal defense.”

The administration’s response to impeachment has been to stonewall Congress, attack the Democrats and deny any wrongdoing on the part of the President. They have even denied that a reconstructed transcript of his call to the Ukrainian president contains anything worrying, in the face of widespread concern.

The ‘strategy’ may end up hurting Trump more than helping him. Refusing to hand over documents and witnesses could easily form an article of impeachment.
