Mike Pompeo Admits: ‘I Was on the Phone Call’ With Trump and Ukraine’s President

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has admitted that he was on the phone call at the center of the emerging impeachment inquiry. Speaking at a press conference in Italy, Pompeo said he was listening in on the call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“As for was I on the phone call? I was on the phone call,” Pompeo said but he did not say whether there had been any red flags or inappropriate aspects to the call, despite being asked directly by a reporter. He presented his presence on the call, which some have said unusual for a secretary of state, as perfectly normal.

Pompeo’s statement appears to contradict what he told ABC’s Martha Raddatz last week. When asked what he thought of Trump’s conversation with Zelenskyy, Pompeo feigned ignorance and acted as though the contents of the call was new information to him.

“So, you just gave me a report about a I.C. whistle-blower complaint, none of which I’ve seen,” Pompeo told Raddatz.

Reporting subsequently claimed that Pompeo was on the call in question, which he has now confirmed more than a week after he dodged questions about it on ABC.
