John Oliver: ‘Stupidest Watergate’ Could Finally See Trump Impeached

Last Week Tonight‘s John Oliver thinks the Ukraine whistleblower scandal could be the thing that finally sees President Donald Trump impeached. The HBO host described the unfolding impeachment inquiry as the ‘Stupidest Watergate.’

“Basically, he is accused of withholding nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine and then using it as leverage to get dirt on Joe Biden,” Oliver said.

“It is very, very dumb. And you might remember, we called his Russia scandal ‘Stupid Watergate,’ which unfortunately means that we now have to work out what this sequel should be called,” he said.

Oliver dubbed the latest scandal ‘Stupid Watergate II: The Stupidest Watergate.’ He moved on to the issue of keeping call records in a highly secure server, which some have alleged was an attempt at a cover up.

“It’s true: The notes from the call were stored in a separate code word-level system meant for highly classified information despite the fact that there was no legitimate reason to do that.” Oliver said. “And why do that if there wasn’t something very bad in there?

Oliver has covered all the various scandals surrounding the President, often joking that this time ‘We’ve got him’ but, he said, ‘Stupidest Watergate’ felt different to all the others.

“Unlike the Mueller Report’s legalistic descriptions of obstruction of justice, Trump pressuring Ukraine to get dirt on his opponent and then hiding the conversation is easy to understand,” he said.

“It’s just gettable. You don’t need to know any more than that to know it’s something presidents absolutely should not be able to do.”

“This particular Trump scandal does start to feel a little different, and something that is absolutely meriting of impeachment—especially because the fact that it is so consistent with all of Trump’s other behavior suggests that it is a pattern that will continue until he leaves office, one way or another.”

The segment is available on YouTube.
