Rudy Giuliani Suggests Homeless People Spread Disease, Says Liberals Can’t Solve Homelessness

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani appeared on Fox & Friends on Friday morning as part of their commemoration of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Giuliani spoke about his memories of the event in front of an audience of firs responders but later in the interview, the Fox News hosts asked him about current Mayor Bill de Blasio and the problems in New York City.

“You look at the conditions in the street,” Giuliani said. “Look at the homelessness in the city. It was gone. Homelessness was gone. And homelessness should be gone. There’s a way to look at homelessness that these liberals just don’t get.”

“When I see a city with homeless people I see a city with a mayor who doesn’t give a damn about people. Because when you give a damn about people you don’t let them sleep on the street.”

Co-host Brian Kilmeade wondered if people were homeless because of a mental illness, Giuliani had other issues.

“And make it impossible to be on the streets,” Giuliani said. “I had a rule: streets are not for living. Somewhere in the Dark Ages we figured out that toilets should be not on the street. Because it creates disease. Look at Los Angeles. What do you think those people do on that street?”

Giuliani went on to defend his policy of using the police to effectively round up the homeless in New York.

“I had a police officer go up to every homeless person and say you can’t sleep here,” the former mayor said, before going on to say that large numbers of homeless people are either alcoholic or have mental illnesses. Strangely, he also said that only ‘a very small percentage’ of homeless people need a place to live.

Towards the end of the conversation, Giuliani touted the Broken Windows theory of policing. This idea is now controversial and has been widely criticized by criminologists and others. Giuliani blamed de Blasio for what he believes will be an increasing problem.
