Democrats Boycott Democracy Commemoration Because Trump Decided To Attend

President Donald Trump will attend a commemoration of American democracy in Jamestown, Virginia on Tuesday in what appears to be a last minute scheduling decision. Virginia Democrats will boycott the event rather than attend with the President.

Both the Democratic caucus and the Black Legislative Caucus will boycott the commemoration, which will celebrate the 400th anniversary of democracy in America. A democratic body was set up in Jamestown in 1619.

“The commemoration of the birth of this nation and its democracy will be tarnished unduly with the participation of the President, who continues to make degrading comments toward minority leaders, promulgate policies that harm marginalized communities, and use racist and xenophobic rhetoric,” the Black Legislative Caucus said.

“We will not be attending any part of the commemorative session where Donald Trump is in attendance,” Virginia House Democrats said.

“The current President does not represent the values that we would celebrate at the 400th anniversary of the oldest democratic body in the western world.”

Trump has been under fire for a series of attacks on Democratic lawmakers of color, most recently Representative Elijah Cummings, whom Trump accused of being a racist.

Trump is likely to use his visit to Jamestown to bolster his democratic credentials and frame his presidency as a continuation of American political tradition.
