On Memorial Day, Dan Bongino Accuses FBI Agents Of Treason

Fox News hosted Dan Bongino on Monday morning to talk about his favorite subject: the supposed ‘coup’ attempt against President Donald Trump. Bongino has been promoting this baseless idea, little more than a conspiracy theory, for months. But his remarks seemed particularly distasteful on Memorial Day.

Bongino was asked about comments made by Representative Liz Cheney. Cheney had said that the actions of FBI agents Peter Stzrok and Lisa Page could amount to treason. These two agents and their text messages criticizing Trump have become the center of a conspiracy in some right-wing circles. In reality, they were quickly removed from the Mueller probe and accusations of an attempted coup are totally overblown.

“Well, Bravo to Liz Cheney,” Bongino said. “You know, large portions of America need to really wake up, guys. This really happened. Okay? We had two senior FBI management level people in the FBI Lisa Page and Peter Strzok texting each other about an insurance policy, texting each other what they should do to prevent the Donald Trump presidency in the event he should win.”

“But it doesn’t end there. This was a coup. This was treason. Yes, I said it and I mean it,” Bongino said. “After the election, after they couldn’t prevent him and after their insurance policy didn’t work, their boss, FBI Director Jim Comey, against FBI guidelines, leaks memos to a media reporter to get a special counsel hired to investigate Donald Trump for firing the FBI director that made these awful decisions. Please rationally explain to me if you just what I just said how else you would describe that.”

While Bongino has been pushing this narrative for a long time and Fox News has given him airtime to do so, his appearance on Memorial Day was especially jarring. On a day for remembering those who have died fighting for the United States, Bongino accused law enforcement officers of treason, a crime punishable by death.
