Trump Super PAC Aims To Raise $300 Million, Targets Big Donors

A super PAC supporting President Donald Trump is aiming to raise $300 million for his re-election effort. America First Action has a difficult task ahead: convincing traditional GOP big money donors to hand over their cash to help Trump win what many see as a difficult re-election bid in 2020.

The super PAC is chaired by former wrestling executive Linda McMahon, who was previously in Trump’s cabinet. McMahon is expected to donate money herself and to make important contacts with potential donors ahead of the next campaign cycle.

Republicans believe Trump’s fundraising apparatus will have to raise around $1 billion in the run-up to the 2020 election. Presidential bids have become increasingly expensive and presidential campaigns often contribute funds towards party coffers.

Trump had difficulty winning over big Republican donors in 2016 because of his position as an outsider. As President, it remains to be seen whether Trump has won over rich Republican supporters. His approval ratings remain poor, but GOP tax cuts have favored the wealthy.

Democrats have been raising millions since announcing their candidacies, often through small donations. Former Vice President Joe Biden is one of the most attractive Democrats for big donors. Trump’s electoral prospects will have an impact on how much he’s able to raise.
