Trump Has Told 10,000 Lies, Washington Post Expected To Conclude

President Donald Trump has told 10,000 ‘false or misleading statement’, or at least the Washington Post is expected to conclude Monday that the President has surpassed the 10,000 mark for the first time. The newspaper has been fact checking and counting Trump’s false statements for more than two years.

Though the Washington Post consistently calls Trump’s statements false or misleading, in reality Trump simply lies, frequently and repeatedly. The reluctance to use the word ‘lie’ or to call the President in liar is common among major media outlets, but there is no other conclusion to draw.

The newspaper will publish its updated list Monday morning, not just counting the lies but also outlining each one and providing evidence for why they are false. Trump tells lies a rate unprecedented in modern politics. His frequent use of Twitter has allowed him to amplify his falsehoods.

Glenn Kessler, the Post‘s chief fact checker, has been keeping track of Trump’s lies since his inauguration on 20 January, 2017. Trump made misleading statements during his inaugural address and hasn’t slowed down since. He has also showed a disdain for fact checking.

Despite the mounting number of falsehoods, Trump’s lies are unlikely to impact his support among his core voters. The President lies so frequently that even his critics have become numb to it. However, tracking Trump’s lies is still an important way to understand how he behaves.
