Trump Really Doesn’t Like Wind Power But Chuck Grassley Calls His Cancer Claims ‘Idiotic’

Senator Chuck Grassley has called President Donald Trump’s comments on wind turbines ‘idiotic.’ Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Grassley criticized Trump for claiming that the noise from wind turbines causes cancer. The President seemed to be channelling an online conspiracy theory.

Grassley said Trump’s comments “were first of all idiotic and it doesn’t show much respect for Chuck Grassley as the grandfather of the wind energy tax credit.”

Grassley supports wind power in part because his home state, Iowa, is a national leader in the wind power industry. Iowa gets 40% of its power from wind energy, according to Bloomberg. Grassley is clearly proud of his role in promoting wind as a sustainable energy source.

President Trump’s suggestion that the noise from wind farms causes cancer is both bizarre and entirely untrue. But it’s part of a concerted attack that Trump has been waging against wind energy for the last few weeks. He started criticizing wind power when the Green New Deal started making headlines.

But Trump has a long history of opposing wind power. He previously compared wind energy to the Lockerbie Bombing, a terrorist attack in Scotland carried out by Libya, saying “wind farms are a disaster for Scotland, like Pan Am 103.” The plan he mentioned was destroyed with significant loss of life.

Recently, Trump has renewed his war on wind. In confusing rally performances and speeches, Trump has said that wind power is unreliable because it doesn’t always blow. He’s even invented a new character – a man who can’t watch TV because the wind isn’t blowing.

Trump’s dislike of wind energy is well-known but its origin is hard to pin down. Far more worrying is Trump’s tendency to promote unfounded conspiracy theories that his supporters latch on to.
