Trump Tells Reporters He ‘Doesn’t Mind’ if Public Sees Mueller Report

President Trump might want to be careful what he wishes for.

During a rambling question-and-answer session on the White House lawn on Wednesday, the president responded to a reporter asking if the American people have a right to see the Mueller report by saying he “doesn’t mind” if it is made public.

“Frankly, I told the House, if you want, let ’em see it,” he added.

Trump then went on a long disquisition bragging about his Electoral College victory and indicating astonishment that his election win did not act as an automatic get-out-of-jail-free card.

“I just won an election with 63 million votes or so, 63 million. I had 206 to 223 in the electoral college, 306 to 223,” the president said. “And I’m saying to myself, wait a minute, I just won one of the greatest election of all time in the history of this country, and even you will admit that, and now I have somebody writing a report that never got a vote…Explain that because my voters don’t get it and I don’t get it.”

“Let it come out, let people see it,” the president added.

This is not the first time the president has said he wants a government report related to Russia’s hacking of the 2016 election to be made public. The problem for him is that every other time, the reports have not exonerated him. If anything, they have only raised more questions.

For example, in February of 2018 the president ordered the declassification and release of a memo written by then-chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Devin Nunes. Trump thought that Nunes’s memo, which Democrats on his committee had voted against releasing, would show that the Justice Department’s Russia investigation was, as he has said many times, a hoax and a witch hunt.

Months later, when a court allowed the release of FBI documents that Nunes had used to write his memo, it became clear that the chairman had distorted the information in them to paint a false picture of what they actually showed, making the FBI look bad and the president and his 2016 campaign look completely innocent.

Trump still would not acknowledge the Nunes memo was fatally flawed. Which is why he does not mind the public seeing the Mueller report.. He is going to claim it exonerates him no matter what.

Reality, however, will decide if it exonerates him to the public.
