Trump Autographed Bibles For Alabama Tornado Survivors

President Donald Trump visited Alabama on Friday to meet survivors of a tornado which killed 23 people. Trump and the First Lady travelled to the town of Beauregard, Alabama on what was a routine trip for presidents: visiting the scenes of natural disasters.

However, Trump’s visit was notable because he autographed two Bibles for survivors of the tornado. The unusual decisions quickly sparked mockery on social media. One of the Bibles was reportedly for a 12-year-old boy. It is almost completely unknown for anyone to autograph a Bible.

Trump spoke at a Baptist church to a crowd that appeared happy to see him, and those who received the signed Bibles may well be happy with them. However, the bizarre move has added to the ongoing discussion about whether Trump’s behavior is presidential.

“We couldn’t get here fast enough,” Trump told the crowd. “I wanted to come the day it happened, but I spoke with the governor, and she said, ‘Just give us a little more time. We need a little more time.'”

President Trump has a history of problems with religion. He once said he didn’t need to ask God for forgiveness and later made a garbled reference to the Second Corinthians during an address to a Christian crowd. He’s also said the Bible is his favorite book, followed by his own Art of the Deal.

It’s notable that Trump did not head to Puerto Rico following devastating hurricanes there, but has gone to Alabama where the damage is less widespread. Alabama voted for the President by a wide margin and is a solid red state.
