Ex-NeverTrumper Glenn Beck Sings ‘Alpha Dog’ Trump’s Praises: He’s a Real Man!

Former #NeverTrump stalwart Glenn Beck has a theory about why Donald Trump has been successful in his political career, and it has nothing to do with the anti-democratic nature of the Electoral College.

Beck was talking about the decline of masculinity on his talk show on BlazeTV on Wednesday with his friend Pat Gray when he had his epiphany. Gray opened the segment with a rant that noted, “Masculinity is supposed to be a bad thing now, a toxic thing. And we’re being told that all the time.”

That was when Beck seemed to have his epiphany, saying: “There are no examples of men being men. James Bond. That’s it. A movie. There’s no male role models.”

Beck’s vision of masculinity would seem to be somewhat retrograde. James Bond movies have long been infamous, particularly in early incarnations, for their misogyny.

Beck continued: “So Donald Trump, here’s a guy who marries a supermodel, is like, ‘Yeah, I can make it with any model I want.’…He is the almost cartoon of an alpha dog. You know what I mean? And I think because we have taken alpha dogs and shot them all, when he comes to the table there’s a lot of guys that are out there goin’ ‘Damn right!’”

What Beck and Gray do not seem to have wrestled with is that masculinity has not gone away. What has changed is society’s definition of it. Donald Trump’s serial groping of women and well-documented adultery might once have been laughed off as “boys will be boys” antics. But standards of behavior for men in how they treat women have evolved. We no longer treat James Bond like a lovable rogue when he dismisses a woman by swatting her on the rear and making a quip about “man talk.”

Beck and Gray seem to be mourning the death of the sentiments about women that Trump expressed in his infamous “grab ’em by the p***y” tape. If conservatives are confused about why the Republican Party no longer appeals to a majority of women, they can perhaps start with this conversation.
