Rep. David Cicilline: Republicans ‘Clutching Their Pearls’ Over Tlaib’s Language But Not Trump’s

Over the past few days, Republicans and conservatives have been beside themselves over Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib saying she’s going to “impeach the motherfucker” at a reception after she was sworn into Congress. Following her comments, a number of Democratic lawmakers have condemned her language and message, with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) going so far as to “apologize to all Americans.”

But while some on the Democratic side are criticizing the freshman congressperson for her profane remarks, others are sticking up for her and calling out Republicans for hypocrisy.

Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) was asked by host Chris Wallace what he thought about the language and the idea of Democrats moving right away to impeaching President Donald Trump. The New York lawmaker responded by saying the Democratic caucus is “big and diverse” and includes a number of people who want to push for impeachment now, causing Wallace to push for a “yes or no” on whether Cicilline condemns her language.

“Look — I’m not going to — it’s kind of odd to hear people on the Republican side who have not condemned the president’s language in a million of different contexts to suddenly be clutching their pearls over her use of that language,” the congressman said.

He went on to state that she made the comments at a “private event” where she can use “whatever language she thinks is appropriate.” It should be noted that while this was a MoveOn reception for progressive lawmakers, a number of reporters were on hand and her remarks were almost immediately published on Twitter by a liberal activist.

As for the president, it would take all of 30 seconds of research to find that he has tossed out f-bombs at public events and used coarse and profane language on a regular basis. On top of that, right before saying Tlaib “dishonored herself” by using that language, the president reportedly cursed like a sailor during a meeting with Democratic leaders.
