Nixon’s Former Counsel: There’s Little Choice But To Start Impeachment Proceedings Against Trump

John Dean, President Richard Nixon’s former counsel, has said that the impeachment of Donald Trump may have to begin soon. His comments come following the publication of sentencing memo for Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen.

Trump featured as an unnamed co-conspirator in Cohen’s sentencing memo – Individual-1. The court filings claimed that Individual-1 knew about and directed Cohen to break federal law in an attempt to benefit his chances in the presidential campaign.

Dean told Erin Burnett OutFront that the sentencing memo ‘implicated Trump directly.’

“I don’t know that this will forever disappear into some dark hole of unprosecutable presidents,” Dean said. “I think it will resurface in the Congress. I think what this totality of today’s filings show that the House is going to have little choice the way this is going other than to start impeachment proceedings.”

President Trump has predictably shrugged off the memo, claiming on Twitter that it clears him completely. That could not be further from the truth. This is the second time that Trump has been listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in a filing relating to the Mueller probe.

There may yet be more problems on the way for Trump. Robert Mueller has not yet filed his final report, which is expected to the damning of Trump and his 2016 campaign. If Trump is the Individual-1 named in the filing, the nation’s politics have passed into unprecedented terrain.
