Donald Trump Keeps Saying He Can Win The African-American Vote

President Donald Trump thinks African-Americans will turn out for Republicans. Speaking at a rally in Ohio last night, Trump re-iterated a claim he’s made several times – that black Americans will vote for him and for his Republican colleagues in November’s midterm elections.

“I think we’re going to get the African American vote,” Trump said at his MAGA rally. He again spoke about the rate of African-American unemployment, which is at record lows. However, Trump’s attempts to take credit for falling unemployment are hollow considering it is a long-term trend that also took place under President Barack Obama.

Trump has claimed several times that African-Americans could vote for Republicans. Just this week, he told Fox News that he was accomplishing things for African-Americans that no Democrat had ever done. He once again spoke about black unemployment rates.

“I mean, I’m doing things for the African-Americans that have never been done by the Democrats and as you know, the Democrats really have had that vote,” Trump said. “They’ve had that vote locked up. It’s not so locked up anymore, you know, because I’m producing numbers that they were never able to produce.”

Trump’s recent meeting with rapper Kanye West may have boosted Trump’s belief that he can secure African-Americans’ votes. However, West has received serious backlash from the African-American community for his outspoken support of the President. Some prominent black artists have publicly criticized him.

African-Americans are disproportionately loyal to the Democrats and that is not likely to change in the immediate future. Recent moves by GOP politicians, including apparent attempts at voter suppression in Georgia, will not help Republicans win African-American votes.
