World’s View Of The US Hits Historic Lows Under Donald Trump

The world’s view of the United States has reached historically low levels, according to a new poll from the Pew Research Center. Trust in the US has declined in many countries across the world under President Donald Trump’s leadership, while trust in Trump himself is also low.

Pew Research Center polled residents in 25 countries and found that only three nations – Israel, Russia and Kenya – have a more positive view of the United States. In general, respondents had less confidence in Trump than China’s Xi Jinping or Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

The decline in trust is particularly keen in America’s traditional allies, especially Canada. Just 39% of those polled in Canada have a positive view of the US. Under Barack Obama, it was 65%. Trump has repeatedly attacked Canadian trade practices and launched personal attacks against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Similarly, Mexicans have lost a significant amount of trust in the US – down to 32% from 66%. The United Kingdom, perhaps America’s closest ally, has seen a slump of 11% since Trump took office.

Some countries have seen a rise in approval for the United States, however. Israeli respondents reported 82% positive views about the US, though this is a rise of just 2 points.  Israel has historically approved of US policy in the region. Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital has no doubt helped maintain and boost approval there.

Positive views of the US are up 11 points in Russia, which US intelligence found had attempted to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. Trump has been largely positive about Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin. Former President Obama was very unpopular in the country.
