Trump On Kavanaugh Accusations: Republicans Couldn’t Be ‘Nicer’ Or ‘More Respectful To The Woman’

Speaking to reporters this morning at the United Nations, President Donald Trump insisted that Senate Republicans have been extremely nice and respectful to one of the accusers of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh while dismissively referring to her as “the woman.” He also said he would have already moved forward with Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

With the GOP members of the Senate Judiciary Committee bringing on female prosecutor Rachel Mitchell to question Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford at Thursday’s highly anticipated hearing, Trump was asked his thoughts on Mitchell. Rather than directly answer the question, the president instead responded by praising the GOP for how they’ve handled the process following Ford’s allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school.

“Well, I think the Senate — the Republicans could not be nicer in the way they are handling this,” he declared. “They could have pushed it through two and a half weeks ago and you wouldn’t be talking about it right now which is frankly what I would have preferred.”

Trump continued, “The Republicans could not be nicer, could not be more respectful to the process, certainly could not be more respectful to the woman, and I’m okay with that. I think I might have pushed it forward a lot faster.”

Since Ford came forward with her accusations, the president has largely refused to say her name in public, generally referring to her as the “woman” or the “accuser.” After showing mild restraint in the immediate days after the allegations were made public, Trump has ramped up his attacks on Ford, as well as taking aim at Deborah Ramirez, another woman who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct.
