Kavanaugh Faces Crucial Few Days As Key Republicans Voice Concerns

This week will be crucial for Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Recent allegations against Kavanaugh may prove a game changer as key Republican senators have started to question the confirmation process. Their votes are essential to getting Kavanaugh confirmed.

Senator Jeff Flake and Senator Bob Corker have said that the Senate Judiciary Committee should not vote on Kavanaugh until they can interview the woman accusing him. Christine Blasey Ford, a professor, has come forward as the author of a letter accusing Kavanaugh of holding her down and trying to remove her clothes.

Senator Lisa Murkowski has said that the committee should consider delaying the vote. Murkowski is a key vote in confirming Kavanaugh and she has been a target of his opponents. Senate Democrats have highlighted some Kavanaugh’s views that could negatively affect native Alaskans. Murkowski represents Alaska.

Ford’s decision to come forward has caused serious problems for the Republican majority, who have been accused of trying to rush Kavanaugh through before the midterm elections. Democrats accuse Kavanaugh for wanting to overturn Roe v. Wade, the historic decision that made abortion legal, along with several other major concerns about his views.

While Republicans have dismissed Democrats’ opposition as ‘grandstanding’ and argued that Kavanaugh will be an impartial judge, Ford’s accusations have changed the situation. It appears Republicans acted quickly to stem the tide by putting together a letter from 65 women who knew Kavanaugh in high school attesting to his character. This letter has not had the desired effect, with many questioning the timing.

Another key issue for Kavanaugh may be President Donald Trump’s reaction to events. So far, Trump has said nothing about the accusations against his Supreme Court pick. However, the President is very unpopular and Kavanaugh is one of the least popular SCOTUS nominees in modern times. If Trump doubles down in his support of Kavanaugh, it could go badly for Kavanaugh. It is worth noting that Trump has been accused of sexual impropriety himself and mocked the women accusing him.
