GOP Senator Blasts Trump: The US Isn’t ‘Some Banana Republic’

Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse strongly criticized President Donald Trump for his tweets about Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Sasse, who is a Republican, issued a statement following Trump’s most recent attack on Sessions.

Trump complained on Twitter that Sessions had allowed two Republican congressmen, Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter, to be indicted before the midterm elections, jeopardizing GOP seats. Some commentators viewed the tweet as a suggestion that Sessions obstruct justice.

Senator Sasse was not impressed by the President’s statements.

“The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice – one for the majority party and one for the minority party” Sasse said.

“These two men have been charged with crimes because of evidence, not because of who the President was when the investigations began. Instead of commenting on ongoing investigations and prosecutions, the job of the President of the United States is to defend the Constitution and protect the impartial administration of justice.”

Sasse is not up for re-election to the Senate this year, and so he may feel freer to critcize the President than some of his colleagues.

Speculation is rife that Trump will fire Sessions before the midterms, despite his allies urging restraint. Congressmen Hunter and Collins were early supporters of Trump, while Sasse has often been at odds with the President.
