Man Arrested For Making Death Threats To ‘The Boston Globe’: ‘You’re The Enemy Of The People’

Robert Chain, a 68-year-old California man, was arrested by FBI agents after making a series of threatening calls to The Boston Globe in “in retaliation for the newspaper’s editorial response to political attacks on the media.” NBC News was the first to break the story.

In a call to the paper’s newsroom on August 16, Chain said: “You’re the enemy of the people, and we’re going to kill every fucking one of you.”

After telling the paper to “call Mueller” while mockingly asking “what are you going to do motherfucker,” Chain ended his call by saying “I’m going to shoot you in the fucking head later today, at 4 o’clock.”

Following the call, the Globe called local law enforcement, who “maintained a presence outside the building.”

According to federal authorities, the suspect made at least 14 calls to the newspaper between August 10 and 22.

Newspapers have been on high alert following the horrific Capital Gazette shooting in late June that left five dead and others wounded. The suspect in that shooting had previous disputes with the paper over an article they published about him in 2011.

Obviously, the use of “enemy of the people” by Chain is going to be contrasted with the president’s repeated use of that phrase to attack the media. In a sick twist of fate, shortly before NBC News reported on Chain’s arrest, President Trump tossed out the insult during a tweetstorm on the media.

“I just cannot state strongly enough how totally dishonest much of the Media is,” Trump wrote. “Truth doesn’t matter to them, they only have their hatred & agenda. This includes fake books, which come out about me all the time, always anonymous sources, and are pure fiction. Enemy of the People!”
