Former US Attorney: This Is More Serious Than Watergate

President Donald Trump’s current situation is more serious than Watergate, according to former US Attorney Harry Litman. Litman told the UK’s Sky News channel that Michael Cohen’s plea deal has major implications for the President and may be unprecedented. Litman claimed Trump had done more than Richard Nixon.

“I think it’s more serious than Watergate in the actual alleged,” Litman said. “Richard Nixon did some obstruction of justice. I think Trump stands already proven to have done more than that and suspected of doing quite a bit more.”

Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen implicated the President in his plea deal, where he confessed to breaking campaign finance laws to influence the 2016 presidential election.

“The difference so far has been, he’s had a firewall in the Congress of the United States – the House of Representatives and the Senate. And it’s the House that would actually need to turn against him in order for him to be impeached.”

“So while on the one hand I think the conduct is to any objective observer is may serious than Watergate, what eventually brought Nixon down was when members of his own party realized the writing was on the wall and explained to him that his support would be eroding.”

“So far, Trump’s allies in Congress and his minority popular support have not been moved by various scandals that I think would have brought down other presidencies. Whether this is finally enough for some people to […] part company with him remains to be seen,” Litman said.

Harry Litman is a former US Attorney and Deputy Assistant Attorney General. He currently teaches constitutional law at UCLA and is a media commentator.
