Devin Nunes In Leaked Audio: GOP Has To Keep Majority In Case ‘Mueller Won’t Clear’ Trump

On Wednesday night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow exclusively obtained audio of Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) speaking at a fundraiser last month for the fourth-ranking House Republican, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA).

During his nearly 40 minutes of remarks, which Maddow received from progressive group Fuse Washington after they paid $250 to attend the fundraiser, Nunes hit on a number of subjects, such as the president’s tweets, House members’ attempt to impeach Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein and when collusion with a foreign government is criminal.

At one point, the House Intelligence Committee chair — who has been one of the president’s most loyal soldiers in Washington — warned the GOP donors that they absolutely needed to make sure that the GOP retained the majority in Congress because that would be the only way to protect President Trump from the jeopardy he faces from the Russia probe.

“So therein lies what’s like your classic Catch-22 situation where we’re at a — it puts us in such a tough spot,” he told the room. “If [Attorney General Jeff] Sessions won’t unrecuse and [Special Counsel Robert] Mueller won’t clear the president, we’re the only ones – which is really the danger.”

Nunes continued, “That’s why I keep, and thank you for saying it by the way, I mean we have to keep all these seats. We have to keep the majority. If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away.”

Breaking this down, it is easy to see what the former Trump Transition member is saying here — Republicans need to stay in the majority to run interference with the investigation or find a way to put an end to it. If they lose the House and/or Senate, they can’t use their power to impede the probe.
