Sarah Huckabee Sanders: ‘The President Isn’t Obstructing, He’s Fighting Back’

In just her fourth on-camera press briefing in a month, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was immediately pressed on President Donald Trump’s Wednesday morning tweets in which he called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. And she echoed the talking points Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani used earlier in the day — it is just Trump blowing off steam.

With lawmakers and media figures noting that Trump’s tweets seemed to be a blatant example of obstruction of justice, Sanders was presented the federal law definition of obstruction and Giuliani’s explanation that Trump wasn’t actually giving an order. She was then asked if Giuliani was giving Trump legal advice on his tweets and if Giuliani’s statement reflects the opinion of Trump’s legal team.

“Look, the president isn’t obstructing, he’s fighting back,” Sanders replied. “The president is stating his opinion. He’s stating it clearly.”

She continued, “And he certainly is expressing the frustration that he has with the level of corruption that we’ve seen from people like Jim Comey, Peter Strzok, Andrew McCabe. There’s a reason the president is angry right now and most of America is angry as well and there’s no real reason he shouldn’t be able to voice that opinion.”

And with that, she quickly moved on, citing an upcoming presidential event as the reason they were “tight on time.” Of course, Sanders scheduled the briefing 20 minutes before the event and then showed up 20 minutes late.
