Presidential Historian Jon Meacham: Impeachment Will Be The ‘Season Finale’ For Trump

Over the weekend and continuing through Monday morning, President Donald Trump lashed out on Twitter over Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian election interference. Reiterating his belief that the investigation is an expensive “Witch Hunt,” the president demanded that the Justice Department look into whether the FBI and DOJ spied on his presidential campaign at the behest of the previous administration.

With the president seemingly intent on driving the country headlong into a constitutional crisis, one of the country’s most respected presidential historians noted that the one-time reality TV star appears to be setting up his “season finale.”

Appearing on Morning Joe Monday morning, Jon Meacham was asked by co-host Joe Scarborough if he thought we were on the verge of another Saturday Night Massacre and if there are parallels to Richard Nixon.

“I think we are,” Meacham responded. “I don’t think that’s hyperbolic, when you have a president who is basically engaging the Justice Department at this level of political detail and calling on investigating his predecessors.”

The former Newsweek editor-in-chief went on to note that like Nixon, Trump is fixated on his predecessors as he is clearly obsessed with Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. He then explained that the “most important political story in the country right now” is the midterm elections and the current House races.

“I’ve been skeptical of this but I would bet a good bit of money this will end up in the House with some kind of impeachment proceeding,” Meacham observed. “And the makeup of that body and ultimate partly the reaction of the United States Senate, which is supposed to be the great deliberative check and final hammer on these things.”

He concluded, “I think we’re going to end up — that’s going to be the season finale of this.”
