Trump, Standing Next To Nigerian PM, Defends ‘Sh*thole’ Comments: Some Countries ‘In Very Bad Shape’

During a Monday joint news conference with Nigerian Prime Minister Muhammadu Buhari, President Donald Trump was put on the spot over his inflammatory “shithole countries” remarks from earlier this year. And the president defended his comments while standing next to the leader of one of the countries he reportedly described as a shithole.

Buhari was asked if he had discussed those comments with Trump, but he demurred, stating that he wasn’t “sure about the validity of whether the allegation was true or not.” The Nigerian PM added that “the best thing for me is to keep quiet.”

The president interjected, confirming the two leaders didn’t discuss his remarks. At the same time, Trump indicated that had they talked about the comments, he would have defended them outright.

“You do have some countries that are in very bad shape and very tough places to live in,” Trump stated. “But we didn’t discuss it because the president knows me and he knows where I’m coming from, and I appreciate that.”

As you may recall, it was back in January when it was reported the president described Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries” from which the United States should not take any migrants. He would reportedly say the US should instead take people from countries such as Norway, which is largely white.
