Trump Adviser Tells Republicans: You’re Not Ronald Reagan’s Party Anymore, You’re Trump’s

Throughout the presidential election, political commentators on both sides of the ideological divide decried how ‘the Party of Reagan’ was being transformed in ‘the Party of Trump’. Conservatives in particular were worried about the GOP’s transformation. Now it appears it has come true.

Stephen Moore, Donald Trump’s economic adviser, reportedly told top House Republicans that the GOP was no longer the party of Ronald Reagan – it was now the party of President-elect Donald Trump. Moore has been described as ‘Mr. Supply Side Economics’, the approach to economic management favored by the Reagan administration.

“Just as Reagan converted the GOP into a conservative party, Trump has converted the GOP into a populist working-class party,” Moore said in an interview after his meeting with leading Republicans. “n some ways this will be good for conservatives and in other ways possibly frustrating.”

This declaration of a change in the GOP’s nature will not be welcomed by all Republicans. Many traditional conservatives in the party and its supporters in the media were aghast at Donald Trump’s rise and even though the GOP now controls every branch of government, many remain worried about the party’s future.

Republicans have held up Ronald Reagan as the perfect model of a president since his term ended in 1989. Reagan’s conservative economic policy, hawkish foreign policy and appeal to Evangelical voters have informed Republican Party policy for more than 30 years.
