Stephen Colbert: Donald Trump Sounded Like ‘The Coked-Up Best Man’ At A Wedding

Today’s news will be dominated by one thing: analysis and verdicts on last night’s first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. But Stephen Colbert passed judgement last night just after the debate ended. The Late Show host was one of millions to notice Trump’s audible sniffing.

“He may not have prepared, and it looked like he didn’t,” Colbert said. Colbert criticized Trump for flip-flopping on his climate change claims. Early on, Clinton said Trump believed climate change was a conspiracy invented by the Chinese. Trump vehemently denied he had ever said this, though he had tweeted exactly that. “There’s always the chance that that tweet was created by the Chinese to make Trump non-competitive,” Colbert said.

Colbert also noticed Trump’s loud sniffling. The sniffling took over social media last night as Trump repeatedly sniffled loudly while Clinton answered questions. Many viewers wondered just what the sniffling was about and whether if reflected on his health.

“Trump sounded like he was fighting off a cold with cocaine,” Colbert said. “He sounded like the coked-up best man in the bathroom at a wedding. He was like ‘Scarface’ — but, you know, with more face.”

Trump’s performance has already been widely criticized for lack of preparation and a rambling style. Trump interrupted Clinton many times with cries of ‘Wrong!’ but his constant sniffling may be Trump’s Al Gore sighing moment.

  1. I noticed Trump’s sniffling, how he kept rudely interrupting Hillary during her allotted two minutes, the fact that he ignored the moderator when he was told that his 2- minute time was up. But the most salient thing about this debate is that Trump simply could not answer reasonable questions. For instance, the birther question – why he continued to lie about Obama’s citizenship for more than 5 years after Obama’s birth certificate had been produced, or why Trump refused to produce his tax returns for voters to review. Trump is so accustomed to dancing around the issues and having an audience that doesn’t mind the ambiguity, that he simply cannot function in an environment where real answers are expected and customary.
