Mexican Senator Wants Texas and California Back If Trump Wins

Mexican Senator Armando Rios Piter wants the country’s senate to pass a new law that would see Mexico taking drastic action if Donald Trump becomes president. Piter was highly critical of Trump’s visit to Mexico and wants to guarantee his government has a strong response to a potential Trump administration.

The most shocking part of the bill is a proposal to rescind the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War in 1848. Though the idea is likely just a stunt to show how Trump’s extreme views can lead to extreme reactions, the proposal is part of a series of measures that would seriously hurt US-Mexico relations.

The Mexican-American War is largely forgotten by most Americans. The Civil War, which started less than 20 years later, tends to overshadow the brief conflict. The war was the last one where the US officially fought a country on its own continent. With the US victory, Mexico officially ceded control of a huge area of territory, including California, Texas and parts of several other modern states.

More realistically, Piter’s bill contains provisions to restrict Mexican government funding on anything that might harm the country. This would include visits to Mexico by Trump administration officials and Trump’s proposed border wall. The bill also suggests that Mexico will take serious measures if a potential President Trump tries to use economic pressure – like banning remittances from Mexicans living in the US.

The potential for a trade war is very clear in Piter’s bill, which should come before the Mexican senate in the next few days. Though nobody seriously believes Mexico will lay claim to US territory, the extremism of the proposals shows how Trump’s rhetoric is affecting America’s neighbors.
