Trump Tries To Win Black Votes With Lies And Insults

Donald Trump is trying to pivot to African-American voters, a key constituency if he wants any chance of winning crucial states in November. But Trump’s strategy to win black votes consists of insults and debunked claims. Trump launched his appeal to African-Americans in a community with a black population of just 1 percent and his approach isn’t getting any better.

Trump gave an interview to Fox News last night apparently laying out his pitch to African-Americans by highlighting the problems they face. “It’s just, like, a total catastrophe, the unemployment rates, everything is bad,” Trump said.”No health care, no education, no anything, no anything. And poverty is unbelievable. Then, I said, ‘Hey, wait a minute, vote for me. What have you got to lose? You can’t do worse, you can’t do any worse than what these people have been doing and I will do better.’”

Trump’s claim that conditions are dire for African-Americans is not borne out by fact. His ideas about rampant unemployment among African-Americans sound more like a typical racial stereotype than a statistical reality. Trump’s pitch seems to be that the black community should give him a try because their lives are so bad, he couldn’t make the situation any worse. This form of outreach seems doomed from the start.
