Ben Carson Brushes Off Melania’s Plagiarism, Says It Shows “We Share The Same Values”

A day after Donald Trump’s wife Melania was exposed as a plagiarist after cribbing her RNC speech from Michelle Obama, Trump supporters have come up with increasingly silly excuses to defend the one-time model. But perhaps the dumbest defense came from the likeliest of all sources — Dr. Ben Carson.

Since dropping out of the Republican presidential primary, Carson has been one of Trump’s staunchest supporters. After endorsing the real estate mogul, Carson was put right to work as a surrogate, and it was reported that he was going to be in charge of Trump’s VP search. Of course, Carson’s penchant for abject stupidity led to him being benched for the most part.

Still, he’s seen as a member of the Trump team, and with this latest unforced error from the campaign, he was asked by reporters of the brouhaha. And, in classic Carson style, he gave a nonsensical and comic response, because that’s what a Ben Carson does.

“If Melania’s speech is similar to Michelle Obama’s speech, that should make us all very happy because we should be saying, whether we’re Democrats or Republicans, we share the same values. If we happen to share values, we should celebrate that, not try to make it into a controversy.

I don’t think they were plagiarized. I think there are general principles that are very valuable to Americans, and of course to express those principles you’re going to use similar language.”

What the what? So blatantly ripping off someone else is cool because it shows you have similar values to the one you stole from? It’s all cool because it just means we can all get long? One love and all that?

Of course, Carson himself has been accused of plagiarism before. Back in January 2015, it was revealed that he lifted sections of his 2012 ‘America the Beautiful’ from a number of other books and websites without providing proper accreditation. He would later apologize for that, but he doesn’t feel Melania needs to do that in this instance.

When pressed on why he chose to apologize back then but feel it’s all good now, the good doc simply stated that he doesn’t like to keep a controversy going. Ooof.

So ends another episode of Explaining Things Poorly with Dr. Ben Carson.
