It Sure As Hell Sounds Like Debbie Wasserman Schultz Is Going To Get The Boot

As we near the end of the Democratic primary season, and it seems all but certain that Hillary Clinton will be the party’s presidential nominee, efforts are underway to unify the party ahead of the general election. Specifically, Washington Dems are looking for a way to placate and reach out to Bernie Sanders supporters, who have taken an increasingly nihilistic approach to the prospect to this election if their man isn’t nominated.

According to a report published by The Hill on Wednesday night, Democrats on Capitol Hill are openly talking about removing Debbie Wasserman Schultz as chairperson of the Democratic National Committee. In fact, if The Hill’s article is to be trusted, it seems like a foregone conclusion that DWS will be gone by July’s convention. It is just about when and how.

From the piece:

“There have been a lot of meetings over the past 48 hours about what color plate do we deliver Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s head on,” said one pro-Clinton Democratic senator.

The lawmaker said senators huddled on the chamber floor last week to talk about Wasserman Schultz’s future and estimated that about a dozen have weighed in during private conversations.

“I don’t see how she can continue to the election. How can she open the convention? Sanders supporters would go nuts,” said the lawmaker, who requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussions.

[…]

A senior Senate Democratic aide said, “There’s a strong sentiment that the current situation is untenable and can only be fixed by her leaving. There’s too much water under the bridge for her to be a neutral arbiter.”

Another Democratic senator who supports Clinton said Wasserman Schultz will hurt her chances of rallying the liberal base in the fall.

“We need to get this figured out and come together,” said the lawmaker. “Hillary’s got the nomination. She needs Bernie’s energy. It’s time for her to accommodate. It’s time to pick hard-nosed people to cut through things and figure out a deal.

Let’s be honest. This is a fucking no-brainer. Bernie and his supporters absolutely hate Wasserman Schultz with every fiber of their being. In their eyes, she’s become the poster child of cronyism and corruption in politics, wrong or right. And, despite what she says publicly, it is apparent that she favors Clinton over Sanders.

Now, has she done anything that has impacted the final results of these primaries? No, not really. Hillary has roughly three million more votes than Bernie, has won more open primaries and ‘blue’ states than Sanders, and has collected roughly 270+ more pledged delegates. Complain about arcane rules and superdelegates all you want, but Bernie will have lost fair and square.

But that isn’t the point now. As it stands, the Bernie or Bust crowd feels like Sanders has not only gotten a raw deal, but that Hillary and the Democratic Party are nothing more than the establishment. They are what they are raging against. And DWS epitomizes it all more than anything. The sooner she’s given the boot, the more likely the Berners are to accept Hillary as the nominee.

With almost all of the remaining primaries occurring in two weeks — Washington, D.C. is the last holdout on June 14th — the Clinton and Sanders campaigns, along with the DNC and other influential Dems, have already begun negotiating concessions ahead of the convention. Earlier this week, it was reported that Sanders will receive five members to the platform committee while Clinton will have six. The DNC chair, who originally had the power to name all 15 members, will now only have four.

We’ll continue to see additional deals cut over the coming weeks, especially after June’s primaries and prior to the convention. Sanders has promised to not concede anything until Philly, but if the pledged delegates and popular vote isn’t there, I think we all know it will be a different story. In the end, Bernie wants Trump to be defeated more than anyone. He’ll do the right thing. And he’ll also make sure the party pushes a more progressive platform and agenda.
