Ben Carson’s Christian Nation Delusion: I Would Not Put A Muslim In Charge Of This Nation

Sunday morning on NBC’s Meet the Press, Dr. Ben Carson openly (and rather comfortably) stated: “ I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.” When asked if a President’s faith should matter to voters, Carson continued, “If it’s inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the Constitution, no problem.”

Someone who wants to be the president of the United States: ANY and EVERY religion a public office-holder may practice is consistent with the Constitution. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution specifies in Article IV that “No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

When Dr. Carson was asked if he believes Islam is “consistent with the Constitution”, he responded: “I do not”. You can watch the full video below:

As a reminder: This man actually wants to be the President of the United States. Dr. Carson’s delusional statements imply that he believes the United States Constitution is somehow linked to his (and every former President’s) religion of Christianity, and that therefore any other religion is “inconsistent” with the American values or the Constitution is really ironic. The very first Amendment of the Bill of Rights, which says that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” is pretty damn clear. Part of the “free exercise” of religion would certainly include the right of a Muslim candidate for President or Congressperson not to be prevented from seeking those offices. This also applies to other groups that send Christians clutching for their pearls: Pagans, Satanists, Wiccans, Buddhists – as well as every other religion and including those whose religious beliefs essentially consist of “no, thanks”.

This is not Dr. Carson’s first demonstration that he doesn’t understand what “separation of church and state” entails; He has also suggested the U.S. should enact a flat-tax code based on the biblical requirement of tithing (wherein ten percent of one’s income is given to the Church, or for Carson’s proposal, the State).

Dr. Carson: America is not a Christian nation, and it’s simply not constitutional to enforce the American people to uphold Christian standards. America is, however, a nation where Christians and everyone else are guaranteed equal protection and the right to practice their beliefs without fear of Governmental consequences. It’s just that simple.
