Mike Huckabee Helpfully Whitesplains How MLK Would Feel About #BlackLivesMatter

In your latest episode of Conservative Whitesplaining Gone Wild, former Arkansas Governor and cherubic little monster Mike Huckabee claimed that if Martin Luther King, Jr. were alive today that he’d be “appalled” by the Black Lives Matter movement. Appearing on CNN Tuesday, the GOP Presidential hopeful was asked by anchor Wolf Blitzer about recent comments Hillary Clinton made to BLM activists that had been caught on tape. The former First Lady and Democratic White House candidate got into a heated exchange with the protesters, especially when she suggested the need for the movement to focus more on policy and changing laws as it pertains to institutional racism.

In response to Wolf’s question regarding whether or not he agreed with Clinton’s remarks, Huck instead pivoted to just talking about racism in a general sense and his views on the movement itself. (Can’t be caught on the record agreeing with Hillary, donchaknow.) Speaking via satellite from Jerusalem where he’s obviously telling Israelis how Obama wants to march them to the doors of the oven, Huckabee claimed that racism is nothing more than a “sin problem” and really has nothing to do with the color of one’s skin. (Yes, he’s fucking serious.)

After patting himself on the back for helping integrate an all-white church that he pastored, the former Fox News personality proceeded to explain just how MLK would feel about black protesters speaking out against institutional racism and police brutality. (Hint: He wouldn’t like it at all and he’d say All Lives Matter.)

“I understand how people have great passions. But I also understand that the way you begin to resolve them is, you do it by loving people and treating people with dignity and respect, and you don’t do it by magnifying the problems — you do it by really magnifying the solutions. And when I hear people scream, ‘black lives matter,’ I think, ‘Of course they do.’ But all lives matter. It’s not that any life matters more than another. That’s the whole message that Dr. King tried to present, and I think he’d be appalled by the notion that we’re elevating some lives above others.”

Thus concludes Pastor Huckabee’s lesson on how black civil rights icons of the past would feel about those fighting against racism today. Class dismissed.

  1. Huckabee just doesn’t get it. ALL Lives DO Matter, BUT when you have unarmed black men killed and this is all he can say, there is an obvious disconnect between him and a number of his fellow Americans. Dr. King would be appalled of the violence inflicted upon people of his color. He recognized his own mortality and spoke about it. He knew that somebody would kill him someday and mentioned the threats from some of our “sick white brothers”. Huckabee fails to mention this. At times, I don’t understand people who think like him. It’s like they don’t consider black people essential enough to be concerned about.
